09:04 pm White vs. red, imps A63 8 K963 AKQJ6
LHO opens 4D (asking for keycards in diamonds).
Pard overcalls 4S.
RHO doubles, showing zero keys.
You pass [do you?!]
LHO bids 5H, to play.
Pass, pass.
Your call.

So you assume that pard was saving with 4S?

I don't really know what partner was doing but 5S has a lot of play to make, and 5H might make some of the times that 5S is down.

5S -- pard can use my clubs to pitch red-suit losers, and all that;s needed to make is A, Q, or singleton Diamond in pard's hand. I have zero red-suit winners and thus don't feel a favorite to beat them more than one in 5H*.

It's possible that LHO was psyching, hoping to hear a 4H response from RHO which she would pass. In that case, partner's 4S might have been a real bid and we might have a slam. If LHO wasn't psyching, it's a bit more likely that 4S was just a lead-director... KQxxx of spades and out. I wonder if opener has something like x AKQJxxxx AQx x
In that case I can X and hope he can't get to the board to finesse in diamonds and will go down 2 for +500, whereas I'm doomed in 5S on a diamond lead or 6C on a red-suit lead.
In any case, I'll X and hope that 4H was a more usual spot.

You totally nailed his hand. This was the famous fabulous fearless and flamboyant Richard Helams, Jr., last night on BBO. I bid to the wrongsided 5S, but a heart came out-- making 5. |
