I leave for Bermuda tomorrow. Yay.

I've been playing lots of club bridge lately. Here's some of the interesting hands:

(1) Teams, red vs. white
Qx  K9xxx  --  KQxxxx
1C (a) (3N) 4S (P)
P          (4N) P  (P)
(b)

(a) Do you open 1C, 1H, or the green card?
(b) What's your call after opening 1C?

(2) MPs, all white
Jxx  x  KQxxx  AJTx
1S - 2D;  3D - ?

We play a fast arrival style (yeah, I know, not best, but easiest)... is this a 3S or a 4S bid?

(3) MPs, all white
A  JT987  Jxxx  xxx
P - 1S; 1N - 2H; ?

What do you have to change about this hand to make it worth a 3H call?

(4) MPs, all red
KJ9x  AQxx  AJxx  x
1D  (X)  2S* (3H)
?
*: weak, generally 3-5 hcp

1a) My personal preference is 1H, but depending on the partnership style I might pass. I don't think this hand is nearly strong enough for a 1C opening.

1b) I think there are a lot of arguments for double here. I would pass if I thought we already had a substantial lead in the team game, though.

2) Even playing fast arrival my personal preference is (very strongly) 3S, but again 4S might be right given some partnership styles. Why is this a bidding question? Playing a style that forces a 4S bid here is pretty naive.

3) Hell if I know. I don't think it's particularly close to 3H.

4) I feel like this question has no good answer. At IMPs I would be happy to just bid 4S, but here I feel like any of pass, 3S, and 4S might be right. Bridge is hard.

Have fun in Bermuda! I hope you will tell us about your adventures there.

(1) I like opening my longest suit, but this is just too weak for me to possibly force the auction to 4C via 1C..2H..3H. So I open 1H. Now I guess I just pass.

(2) I bid 4S. We have a nice hand, but it's still minimum with bad spades (danger sign), assuming 2D is game forcing. We could have a perfecto 6D but matchpoints make that even harder to bid, so I keep things simple.

(3) I bid 3H if you change the DJ to DK. Controls are needed for light game.

(4) Spades seem likely to be divided 4360 around the table, making it less likely they have a 4-3 heart fit. So I bid 4S because I think partner doesn't need very much for it to make. Given that I'm bidding 4S to make, I don't know about slowrolling (if they pass out 3S, I'm not very happy). I'm also not afraid of pushing them into 5 level because I can double that for probable +200, which is better than playing 3S making 4.

5s. Partner bid 4s to make, opps bid 4N to make. Justifying any other action seems difficult, though I'm not totally confident about this bid.

3s. I'd bid 3s with Jxx x KQxxx Axxx. Having two top honors in your side fit is very powerful. I would bid 4s with Qxx Q Kxxxx AQxx. Putting pard on KQ10xx Axxx Axx x is pretty reasonable, and it's not 100% clear you will even reach slam if he has this hand if you bid 3s (surely you will sign off next).

This is already a 3h call. Give pard xxxxx AKxxx x xx and game is pretty reasonable, and he clearly wouldn't accept a game try.

4s. How could we possibly bid anything else?

1a) 1H
1b) pass
2) 4S
3) It's already a 3H to me. =))))
4) pass

Hm. According to Charlie's comment though I think all my decisions prove I'm a bad player. =) Well I suppose he specifically used the word "naive" but yeah, same difference.

1) I open a weak 2C, what's the problem. (If we're playing a weird 2C gadget and I don't have this option... I opened a very similar hand the other day and got burned (regardless of which opening I might have chosen; I bid 1H), so for the moment I will say pass.) If I am forced to open 1C and the auction goes like this I pass quickly.

2) 3S, unless our style is that partner expects a diamond suit at least this good for 2D (as mine often is)

3) I bid 3H on this actual hand. If partner has a random 5-5 game is probably cold.

4) I did not have this problem as I opened this hand 1NT. (If pressed, 3S.)
